Despite the ponderous title, this book by University of Waikato Professor of Screen and Media Studies Dan Fleming is an intriguing look at Vincent Ward's career. Enthusiasts and anyone interested in general in how films are actually made will be enthralled by the way in which Fleming takes as his starting point the hands-on nitty-gritty of film. Any theorising thus has a firm basis in filmmaking practice. The result is the closest of illuminating readings. The wide variety of imagery — still frames, script pages, diagrams and musical notation — add to the impression of plenty.
